Apple iPhone sales are projected to go up to 9.5 million units this year, according to estimates

Indian government's Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a high severity alert for several Apple products that could affect users of the iPhone, iPad, Vision Pro, MacBook, Apple Watch and Apple TV. The central agency said several vulnerabilities had been found in various Apple software and provided a possible workaround.

In a latest release about vulnerabilities in Apple products, CERT-IN stated, "Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in Apple products which could allow an attacker to access sensitive information, execute arbitrary code, bypass security restrictions, cause denial of service (DoS) and perform spoofing attacks on the targeted system."

What software is affected by the latest leak?

Apple iOS versions prior to 17.6 and iPadOS versions prior to 17.6

Apple iOS versions prior to 16.7.9 and iPadOS versions prior to 16.7.9

Apple macOS Sonoma versions prior to 14.6

Apple macOS Ventura versions prior to 13.6.8

Apple macOS Monterey versions prior to 12.7.6

Apple watchOS versions prior to 10.6

Apple tvOS versions prior to 17.6

Apple visionOS versions prior to 1.3

Apple Safari versions prior to 17.6

What does Indian govt suggest?

CERT-In indicates that Apple has already addressed these issues in its latest security updates and urges users to apply the appropriate security update to secure their device.

In May, CERT-In issued a similar warning for Safari browser, Vision Pro, MacBooks and Apple Watch users, highlighting a vulnerability that could be exploited by a potential attacker. It had then said that these vulnerabilities exist for a number of reasons, including improper validation in Bluetooth, MediaRemote, Photos, Safari and Webkit components. There are also privacy-related issues in ExtensionKit, Share Sheet, memory corruption, lock screen and timing side channel.

Affected Devices

The warning targets several Apple devices, emphasizing the necessity for users to take immediate action. The affected devices include:

  • iPhones: Models running iOS 14.6 and later.
  • iPads: Models running iPadOS 14.6 and later.
  • MacBooks: Models running macOS Big Sur 11.4 and later.

Detailed Steps to Secure Your Apple Devices

To safeguard your Apple devices from potential threats, follow these comprehensive steps:

1. Update Your Software

Regular software updates from Apple include patches for security vulnerabilities. Ensure your device’s operating system is up to date:

  • iPhone/iPad: Navigate to Settings > General > Software Update. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the latest update.
  • MacBook: Click on the Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update. If an update is available, click Update Now.

2. Enable Automatic Updates

Automatic updates ensure your device is always running the latest software version, reducing the risk of security threats:

  • iPhone/iPad: Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. Toggle on Download iOS Updates and Install iOS Updates.
  • MacBook: Click on the Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update. Check the box for Automatically keep my Mac up to date.

3. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

A strong password is your first line of defense against unauthorized access. Create a unique password for your Apple ID and devices, and consider using a password manager to store and manage your passwords securely.

4. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Two-factor authentication provides an extra layer of security to your Apple ID, ensuring that even if someone knows your password, they cannot access your account without the second factor:

  • iPhone/iPad: Go to Settings > [Your Name] > Password & Security > Two-Factor Authentication and follow the instructions to set it up.
  • MacBook: Click on the Apple menu > System Preferences > Apple ID > Password & Security > Two-Factor Authentication and follow the instructions.

5. Be Wary of Phishing Scams

Phishing scams can trick you into providing personal information by pretending to be a legitimate source. Always verify the sender's information and never click on suspicious links or provide sensitive information through email or messages.

6. Use a VPN for Added Security

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) encrypts your internet connection, making it more difficult for hackers to intercept your data. Use a reputable VPN service, especially when using public Wi-Fi networks.

7. Review App Permissions

Regularly review the permissions granted to apps on your device. Limit access to sensitive data and features that are unnecessary for the app’s functionality:

  • iPhone/iPad: Go to Settings > Privacy, and review the permissions for each app.
  • MacBook: Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy, and review the permissions for each app.

8. Monitor for Unusual Activity

Stay vigilant and monitor your device for any unusual activity. Unfamiliar apps, sudden battery drain, or unexpected pop-ups could indicate a security issue. If you suspect your device has been compromised, reset it to factory settings and restore from a backup.
